Our State Drink
Hi Polymer lids, and other non perforated devices.
I have a question to put to the readers of ROAR. Sure I could just google things, but I think this will be more fun.
Back when I was a kid, each State in Australia had their own brand of State soft drink. Then it was bought out by Coca-Cola, and they all disappeared, only to reappear rebranded, under the New South Wales name, but missing all the good varieties.
The State drinks, were all your favourite flavours, There was Pineapple, Raspberry, Lemonade, Lime (which had a strange push button opening system), Sars, and countless others. The big one to note was Creamy soda was brown here in Victoria, but Red in New South Wales, a case which remains today.
Here in Victoria, the drinks were marketed under the name of Marchants, and it had a great little jingle which is still in my head to this day;
Make Mine Marchants,
Cause it's Our, State, Drink!
So I am looking for people to complete the list, what was the drinks called in your State?
Victoria: Marchants
New South Wales: Kirks Shelleys
Queensland: Kirks (Thanks Dr. Evil)
Tasmania:
South Australia: Boyds? (I don't know why, this just rings a bell)
Western Australia: Gests/Guest (Thanks Sophie)
Northern Territory:
Australian Capital Territory:

I liked the drink named TAB...and of course the SARSPARILLA my pop would shout me from the shop and we would have half a glass of it each with a MARIE biscuit to accompany it :)
To add some info to the Kirks they started out in Helidon just east of Toowoomba at the bottom of the range. I think they had something to do with the Hot Water spa's there. Now owned by Coca Cola.
Some other brands from QLD I remember.
* Crows Nest Softdrinks - Made in Crows Nest which is north of Toowoomba. I'm sure that they are still going.
* Osbournes - We use to get their softdrinks delivered to our door up until mid 90's.
* Golden Circle - Still being made at the Northgate factory.
* Bundy Rum - They make Sars, Ginger Beer & Root Beer.
I guess the're are many other brands which may still or still not exist.
I remember going past a soft drink factory in Charter Towers in Northern Qld on my last trip through that area but I can't remember their name.
How come the only brand that I see in supermarkets here in Victoria is Kirks? I remember Marchants, and Shelleys in NSW as well.
IMHO nothing Marchants beats Portello!
I remember holidays in NSW in the late 80's and early 90's and wondering why they had different flavours of Fanta when we only had Orange.
You had SARS soda? I can only imagine the tagline - "It's *coughcough* like a breath *coughcough* of fresh air!"
"South Australia: Boyds? (I don't know why, this just rings a bell)"...rings a bell because of all them there churches in that city :-)
Boyds it is...I had it to drink when I went to my Aunt's place in the 1980's.
Hi Cazzie,
TAB was the first diet drink, and made by Pepsi I think. I remember the colour of the cans, not quite red, not quite pink, not quite anything really. I acutally wondered why the T.A.B. betting agency had a drink on th market. I wonder if it made horses run faster?
Hi Dr Evil,
It has been added to the list. As for Sars, now I know why you are evil, that stuff should be banned.
Hi Mr Huggies,
Yeah, there are still a shit load of drinks around. Port of Echuca is one of my favourites when I can find it.
This list is kind of of the last lot of well known brands, before there was just coke and pepsi.
Hi Ben,
Thanks for finding the Rants. Yeah, I remember the different Fanta's as well. They tasted really weird. On of my favourite things to do is go shopping interstate overseas, just to see what different things there are to buy.
Hi Stewie,
Yes we had SARS, Deadly goodness in every mouthful. Glad I never drank it, the smell is off putting enough for me.
Hi Cazzie,
I'm thinking Boyds might have only been close to the boarder, and the main one of the state was "Eecks", I will have to keep researching this one.
Hi Dr Evil,
No, but Root Beer is the American version of SARS.
Hi Andy,
Yes, that was for Slades soft drinks. You can still get slades in a few places, but they are hard to find these days. I think there is one in Huntingdale, and one in St.Albans. I use to love the factory outlet in Footscray, heaps of cheap stuff there always.

Root Beer is Root Beer, it ain't no version of any such shit as what happens to have the UNFORTUNATE name SARS!
Hahaha, Mark's just in the crappy mood coz he got evicted from Big Blogger 2.....hey...I wonder what stae will have Sonic Cherry Diet Cola as per Hillbilly Momma ?
Oh, I've been lurking for ages.
Anyway, thinking about Tasmania, it could be Cascade who apart from brewing beer and making apple juice also make a whole range of soft drinks.
"You angry commenter......"
You'd be pissed too if the aliens stuck an anal probe in your ear lobe.
Cazzie,
The state of Hillmomba, of course.
